Anavar (generic name oxandrolone) is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid [0.12] originally developed to promote weight gain, rebuild muscle mass after severe trauma, illness, or surgery, and treat bone pain from osteoporosis.
Although often marketed illicitly as a “mild” or “safe” oral steroid, Anavar carries significant health risks, potential for misuse, and dependence.
Medical Uses and Classification
- Drug Class: Anabolic steroid (androgenic hormone).
- Controlled Status: Classified as a Schedule III controlled substance under the Anabolic Steroids Control Act due to its risk for misuse and dependence.
- Approved Uses: Historically prescribed to offset protein breakdown from long-term corticosteroid therapy, promote weight recovery after major surgery or chronic infection, and ease bone pain.
Risks and Side Effects
Despite being perceived as gentle, Anavar is processed through the liver (17-alpha-alkylated) and impacts natural endocrine functions.
- Liver Strain: Can cause elevated liver enzymes, cholestatic jaundice, and severe hepatic complications.
- Cardiovascular Impact: Lowers “good” HDL cholesterol and raises “bad” LDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
- Hormonal Suppression: Suppresses natural testosterone production, leading to testicular shrinkage, reduced sperm count, and potential infertility in men.
- Virilization in Women: Can cause irreversible deepening of the voice, facial hair growth, and clitoral enlargement.
- Mental Health: Can trigger severe mood swings, anxiety, aggression, and depressive crashes during withdrawal.
