Avanafil (sold under the brand name Stendra) is a prescription oral tablet used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men
- Mechanism: It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
- Action: It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation to help achieve and maintain an erection.
- Limitations: It does not cure ED, increase sexual desire, or protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
- Starting dose: Typically 100 mg taken as a single dose by mouth.
- Timing: Taken approximately 15 to 30 minutes before sexual activity.
- Frequency: Do not take more than once per day.
- Headache
- Flushing (warmth or redness in the face, neck, or chest)
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
- Sore throat
- Nitrates: Do not take avanafil if you use nitrate drugs (like nitroglycerin), as the combination can cause a sudden, unsafe drop in blood pressure.
- Alpha-blockers: Combining it with alpha-blockers for high blood pressure or prostate enlargement can lead to dizziness or fainting from low blood pressure.
- Medical history: Discuss your complete medical history with your doctor, especially heart problems, stroke, liver or kidney disease, or abnormal penis shape.
